The driveshaft went back in by hand

One piece of good news in the same corner of the truck. The rear driveshaft had been shoved forward into the transfer case by the impact, which is part of what put the whole rear end under suspicion to begin with.

With the shaft disconnected from the pinion flange at the axle, it slid back into the slip yoke by hand - with a great deal of effort, but by hand - and nothing is leaking from the transfer case. Ford designs real travel into that joint, so there is good reason to think nothing behind it needs replacing.

Reason to think is not the same as knowing. Splines can gall, and a seal can start weeping later without showing anything today. It goes in the column of things that look fine and get checked again once the truck moves under its own power.
