Why this option

A replacement for the active grille shutter, the motorized louvers behind the grille, as part of putting the front end back together.

Trade-offs

Aftermarket rather than OEM, another exception to the collision-repair policy. Getting it to work with the shutter motor took some work.

What wasn't in the instructions

  • The shutter's drive spline was too short to seat fully in the motor. The plastic was cut back and more spline length filed in until it seated, which let the top fin slide in and lock on the other side.
