Towing

Weight-distribution hitch

2023 Ford F-150 Tremor · 5.0L V8

This decision is still open. 3 options are being compared, nothing has been ordered, and no manufacturer has been committed to. Where one option is marked as currently leaning, that's a preference at this stage — not a decision.

What this turns on

Both the ProPride 3P and the Hensley Ultimate Arrow are projected-pivot-point designs: they aim to prevent the geometry that produces sway rather than damp it once it has started. Where they differ is how they stop the ball rotating. The Arrow uses two adjustable struts anchored to the frame on both sides; the 3P uses a yoke bolted into the main head at a single point. Both manufacturers describe that difference in the same terms, and it is the fork this decision turns on. What follows from it — whether spreading the load across two struts is worth the adjustment they need, or whether a single fixed attachment is worth concentrating it — is a trade-off, not a fault on either side. Both companies answered detailed questions about this truck directly, and neither has been towed with here yet.

An earlier version of this page placed Hensley second on serviceability and current support. That was written without a basis, and Hensley asked directly what it rested on. There was not a good answer. Hensley staffs an emergency line outside business hours, including evenings and weekends, alongside normal hours. The claim has been removed.

3P hitch

ProPride

Researching

Why this option

A projected-pivot-point design that aims to prevent the geometry causing sway rather than damping it once it has started — the distinction that matters most with a long, tall, relatively light Airstream behind a half-ton truck. The 3P and the Hensley Arrow were designed by the same engineer, Sean Woodruff, with the 3P the later of the two.

Where it currently stands

The yoke carries the anti-rotation load at a single frame attachment. That is what removes the periodic strut adjustment, and it is also what concentrates the load where the other design spreads it. Which of those matters more over a season of towing is the open question here, and nothing on this truck has answered it yet.

Trade-offs

Among the most expensive hitches on the market, and at 195 lb heavy enough that hitching and unhitching is a real consideration. Rated to 1,400 lb tongue weight at the top of the range — well beyond what a 6,500 lb Airstream asks of it.

From the manufacturer

ProPride · 2026-09-08 — sent in reply to an outreach email about this build. Their account of their own product, not a finding from this truck.

Sean Woodruff designed both the Arrow and the 3P, and describes the 3P as the later design, with every change driven by customer feedback. The revisions he lists are a redesigned hitch box for easier hitching and unhitching, a yoke bolted into the main head, a jack that sits directly on the frame, thicker steering links, an adjustable hitch bar with tilt to aid weight distribution, and a revised spring bar retainer. He also offered to answer technical questions on this build directly.

  • “I'm the engineer who designed the Arrow and the 3P hitch.”
  • “Every change we made came from customer feedback to improve the performance and user experience.”
  • “The 3P is manufactured in-house with robotic welding and specialized forging.”

Ultimate Arrow hitch

Hensley

Researching

Why this option

The other projected-pivot-point design, working on the same principle. Hensley states the Ultimate Arrow is their current design, released in 2025, carrying 30 years of revisions to a hitch that dates to 1994. Their published comparison lists it at 16,000 lb and 1,600 lb tongue weight for $3,195, against 14,000 lb and 1,400 lb for $3,695.

Where it currently stands

The two struts spread the anti-rotation load across both frame rails, at the cost of an adjustment that has to be kept up. Hensley's account is that adjusting them takes seconds and needs no work under the tongue of the trailer. Whether that reads as a chore or a non-event is the kind of thing only a season of towing settles.

Trade-offs

The rating advantage does not bear on this truck. Both hitches are rated well beyond a 6,500 lb Airstream, so the gap between 16,000 lb and 14,000 lb would only matter to a heavier trailer. The price gap is drawn from Hensley's own comparison rather than a quote from each company, and ProPride's delivered price has not been confirmed.

Hensley staffs an emergency line outside business hours, including evenings and weekends, alongside normal business hours. They state the Ultimate Arrow is their newest design, released in 2025, and that adjusting the struts is a seconds-long job that needs no work under the tongue of the trailer.

SwayPro weight distribution hitch

Blue Ox

Researching

Why this option

Considerably cheaper and lighter, with a well-proven cam-based sway control that many Airstream owners run happily.

Where it currently stands

Cam-based systems resist sway once it begins rather than preventing the geometry that causes it. Worth the comparison because the price gap is large and the real-world difference is debated.
